Included in these galleries are the black and white versions of select qualified images that were originated in color and are displayed in the color galleries. Not all color images can be successful as black and white images. Levels of contrast, shape, form, and textural qualities need to be considered in the image for it to be a candidate for a successful black and white conversion.
Creating a black and white image from a color image is a new creative process that results in a new work. In creating these images, artistic judgement is exercised with control in how each of the colors are converted to different shades of gray as well as in selectively applying brightness, contrast, dodging, and burning to various areas of the image.
